The Dos and Don’ts of Coastal Minimalism

If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you’re a lover of the coastal design style much like myself. And I love that about you! 🙂

The coastal style lends itself to a minimal design, but what are ways to actually achieve that true minimalistic style while still keeping the general feel of coastal design?

Coastal minimalism isn’t just about dialing back clutter or ditching bold colors. It’s about creating a light, airy, and functional environment; a space that feels like an actual breath of fresh (ocean) air.

Even if you’re bringing coastal vibes into your city apartment, knowing the dos and don’ts of this style is key to achieving its effortless aesthetic.

The Key Principles of Coastal Minimalism

What is Coastal Minimalism?

Coastal minimalism takes traditional coastal decor and pares it down to its cleanest elements.

Think of it as a simpler, more functional take on “beachy” interiors.

In this design style, we want to include an emphasis on natural light, muted color palettes, clean lines, and organic textures.

It’s all about creating a peaceful sanctuary that provides the charm of coastal living, without the visual overwhelm of overdecorated spaces.

The Role of Restraint

Coastal minimalism hinges on intentionality.

Every element should serve a purpose, even if it’s just aesthetic.

Instead of over-accessorizing, the focus is on curating a space with a few well-chosen pieces that radiate charm and warmth.

This also allows your budget to grow a bit because you can afford to spend more money on fewer, more high end pieces.

The Dos of Coastal Minimalism

Stick to a Neutral Palette with Coastal Accents

Room Sources: Upholstered Bed | Rug | Nightstand (similar “look for less” nightstand) | Wall Sconces | Duvet Cover | Beige Chunky Knit Throw Blanket | White Linen Euro Shams | Woven bench | Bench Cushion | Blue & White Pillow Covers | Blue Lumbar Pillow | Drapes (“snow white” color) | Curtain Rod | Clip Rings | Woven Shades (“Tibet Ivory” color) | Rattan Chair | Sunset Artwork | White Vase | Hydrangeas | Palm Stems

Coastal minimalism thrives on a soft, neutral palette.

Whites, creams, soft grays, and muted blues are the foundation of this design style in a whole home color palette.

Use accent colors sparingly. Perhaps through a throw pillow, a piece of art, or subtly striped textiles. This restraint keeps the space light and cohesive while still nodding to the coastal aesthetic.

Incorporate Natural Materials

Opt for light wood furniture, linen upholstery, jute rugs, rattan chairs, or seagrass baskets.

The trick is to layer these materials thoughtfully so that they feel intentional rather than overwhelming.

For example, a jute rug paired with a light colored sofa and a rattan pendant light creates texture while still remaining simple.

Maximize Natural Light

Natural light not only brightens the space but also amplifies the surroundings, even if you’re not on the coast.

Sheer or semi-sheer curtains are an excellent way to diffuse light without obstructing it.

Additionally, mirrors strategically placed can help bounce natural light throughout the room.

Like I mentioned earlier, light-colored walls in soft, neutral shades are going to help with the rooms feeling larger and more open.

Embrace Functional Decor

Every piece of decor should also serve a purpose.

A woven basket can double as storage, or a storage ottoman can be both practical and stylish.

Seek out multi-functional furniture like a bench with hidden storage to maintain both the minimalist aesthetic and practical needs.

Use Subtle Coastal Touches

Accent your space with understated nods to the coast.

A single white coral sculpture, a textured ceramic vase, woven textiles, or even framed landscape photography can create a coastal feel without overpowering the room.

Remember, in coastal minimalism, it’s about quality over quantity. Choose a few standout pieces rather than an abundance of beachy “filler stuff”.

The Don’ts of Coastal Minimalism

Don’t Overload on Nautical or Beachy Elements

While anchors, seashells, and starfish may scream “beach”, it doesn’t really scream coastal and going overboard with those things can make your space feel more kitschy than chic.

Instead of literal interpretations, opt for subtle hints of the ocean. Think of decor that suggests coastal living, rather than shouting it.

Don’t Overcrowd Your Space

One of the defining features of minimalism is the idea of “room to breathe.”

Room Sources: neutral rug | upholstered bed (zuma white color) | rattan chair | nightstand & similar budget-friendly version | wall sconces | abstract sunset artwork | tall white vase | white hydrangeas | palm stems

Avoid filling every corner of your room with furniture or decor, or every wall with artwork. In the example above, you’ll notice I left the far right wall in my bedroom (by the chair) empty so that the sunset artwork above the fireplace could be the focal point.

For a minimalist space, less is always more.

Pare down throw pillows, remove unnecessary trinkets, and leave negative space on shelves or walls for a clean, uncluttered look.

Don’t Use Loud or Bold Colors

Bold paint colors often clash with the softer tones of coastal minimalism.

While you can bring in color with your accent pieces, they should still stick with a general coastal palette to maintain balance.

Instead of shockingly bright blues, stick to softer, diffused variations of these colors for a more calming effect.

Don’t Forget About Texture

Texture is one of the best parts of the coastal design style! Don’t forget about it!

Without thoughtful textural elements, coastal minimalism can easily feel one-dimensional.

For example, layer a blue & white rug over a natural woven rug to create warmth & coziness – especially in the winter months! Or, pair a woven rug with a textured knit throw blanket – then balance the look with a smooth ceramic vase. This variety keeps the space inviting while staying true to minimalist principles.

Don’t Overlook Practicality

It’s easy to get caught up in aesthetics, but practicality is just as important in coastal minimalism.

Don’t choose uncomfortable furniture or impractical decor just because it looks good. Your guests (or significant other) won’t appreciate it – I promise.

You should always prioritize creating a space that works for you. Always prioritize functionality when curating your space.

A blue & white quilt on a gorgeous navy upholstered bed, light wood nightstands, and a cozy lounge chair are perfect for a teen boy, without over-styling.

Additionally, practice the art of editing.

Which means every season, evaluate your space and remove anything that feels unnecessary or out of place. Regularly decluttering allows your home to evolve while staying true to its minimalist roots.

Get To Work

Remember, this design style isn’t about sacrificing warmth at all. It’s about intentionally creating a space that works for you while offering an escape from the day-to-day grind we are all in.

Experiment with these guidelines, add your own personal touch and sparkle, then watch your home transform into a coastal chic place of your dreams.

By blending the coastal design with the simplicity of minimalism, you can create a home that feels both timeless and effortlessly chic!
